Rum For Mojito

Today, we are going to talk about one of our favorite drinks: the mojito! A mojito is a delicious combination of rum, lime, mint, and sparkling water. It is a refreshingly delicious cocktail and suits many different occasions. Whether you are having your mojito on the beach, or enjoying it with a nice seafood dinner, it is important that your mojito is paired with the proper rum.

1. Bacardi Rum Mojito

For the classic mojito we recommend using Bacardi as your choice of rum. Bacardi is likely the closest thing to the real Cuban Rum that is available to us on the market, so it is the closest thing (outside of Cuba) you are going to get to a traditional Cuban Mojito.

How to Make:

½ Cup crushed ice
2.5 oz. of Bacardi
4.5 oz of Sparkling Water
3 Limes (muddled) to get the juice out
6-8 Mint Leaves muddled slightly into the mix
1 Drink Umbrella (for Decoration)

Start with pouring the crushed ice in the glass. Muddle the mint, but be careful not to over muddle it, just very lightly muddle it into the ice. Same goes with the lime, lightly muddle the lime into the mixture until you have gotten juice out of all 3 of the limes. Pour in the 2.5 oz. of Bacardi, and the pour in the 4.5 oz. of sparkling water. Voila, there you have it. The closest mojito to the original Cuban mojito you will be able to find in the states. We love Bacardi and the rich flavor of Bacardi mixed with the tang of the lime and the refreshing nature of the mint makes this the perfect drink.

2. Sailor Jerry Rum Mojito

For the more spicy and dirty take on a mojito, we recommend using Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum as your choice of rum to make your mojito. Spiced rums definitely add a little fun kick of flavor that get your night started off with a bang! They also are an interestingly delicious taste, because they are slightly different because of the element of the spiciness. That being said, they are so amazingly delicious and a must try!

How to Make:

½ Cup crushed ice
3 oz. of Sailor Jerry
5 oz of Sparkling Water
3 Limes (muddled) to get the juice out
6-8 Mint Leaves muddled slightly into the mix
1 Drink Umbrella (for Decoration)

This drink is made by pouring the ½ cup of ice into a glass, and the slightly muddling the mint so as not to make the drink to strong. Then, you slightly muddle the limes (enough until you have the lime juice completely drained from the limes). Next, you add the Sailor Jerry and give it a nice 3 oz. pour (you can be slightly heavy handed on this one for a little extra fun if you are in the mood). Next, you pour the 5 oz. of sparkling water into the glass. You then mix everything together, and of course to top it off, you are able to add a drink umbrella for decoration. There you have it. A Sailor Jerry Rum mojito.

3. The Real Deal- Havana Club Mojito

The last rum we have on the list today is for those who are more adventurous. Those who really absolutely want the most authentic mojito possible. This mojito will require a journey to Cuba, or a friend willing to fly back with a bottle of this very special rum. This rum is none other than Havana Club: the rum of all rums. The rum of Cuba, which is unfortunately unavailable in the US due to trade embargos; however, you or a friend can travel to get the rum. You are allowed to bring back 2 Liter bottles of the rum through customs. This is a luxurious mojito that is the real deal, and will bring the tropical experience of being on the beautiful island of Cuba to you.

How to Make:

½ Cup crushed ice
3 oz. of Havana Club Rum
5 oz of Sparkling Water
3 Limes (muddled) to get the juice out
6-8 Mint Leaves muddled slightly into the mix
1 Drink Umbrella (for Decoration)

This drink is made by pouring the ½ cup of ice into a glass, and then by just ever so slightly muddling the mint, so as not to make the drink to strong and minty. Then, you slightly muddle the limes (enough until you have the lime juice completely drained from the limes). This is designed to add a tangy flavor mojitos are known for. Next, you add the exclusive Havana Club and give it a nice 3 oz. pour (you can be extra heavy handed on this one for a little extra fun if you are in the mood as they definitely do this in Cuba). Next, you pour the 5 oz. of sparkling water into the glass and you then mix everything together with a stirrer. Lastly, of course to top it off, you are able to add a drink umbrella as a cute decoration. Here you go: you have made an authentic Havana Club Rum Mojito. This is the authentic Cuban way to have a mojito and is so extremely delicious.

We love mojitos, and any good mojito must have a good choice of rum to make it taste amazing. The above three rums provided are all excellent choices, but if we had to select our favorite from the list, we would select Havana Club. So, if you or a friend is able to venture off to Cuba, make sure that one of you comes back with Havana Club in tow. It is all over the stores in Cuba and is their rum of choice at the bars as well. You certainly will not regret going with this classic rum, considered the rum of all rums. But don’t let us discourage you from Bacardi and Sailor Jerry’s rum, they are both excellent choices as well. If you love rum, you love mojitos, and you most certainly will love all the rums on our list.
